Overview
JellyCar, originally released as JelloCar, is a freeware 2D physics-based driving-platformer developed and digitally released by Tim FitzRandolph (under the alias walaber) for the PC via his website on October 6, 2007.
In JellyCar, players attempt to guide a car through an obstacle course in order to reach the goal as fast as they can. As the title implies, the game uses soft-body physics to make the car maneuver as if it, along with certain platforms an obstacles, were gelatinous. Along with being able to squeeze through gaps, the car can transform into a larger monster truck at-will (as long as the regenerating gauge is not empty) to knock over obstacles and cross over long gaps. Along with its squishy physics, the game is known for its stylized hand-drawn crayon "doodle" aesthetic and use of vocal sound effects.
The game was developed with the XNA framework as an example of the developer's soft-body physics simulation library (known as JellyPhysics). The original 1.0 release also included a version for the Xbox 360, for use with XNA Game Studio Express and the XNA Creator's Club. A time-limited demo of this version was released on Xbox Live as part of the 2008 closed beta of the Xbox Live Community Games, exclusive to those in the XNA Creator's Club. It is one of the few games in the beta to not have a full Xbox Live Community Games release. The game later received a mobile port to iPhones on October 19, 2008, featuring both touchscreen and gyro controls.
The game later received two sequels, JellyCar 2 and JellyCar 3, followed by a 2022 revival (JellyCar Worlds).
