EDIT: SPOLERS ARE OPEN

Welcome to the Unsanctioned Unofficial Game Pass Game Club Year 3! Our 16th game of 2024 is Flintlock: The Siege at Dawn. The target completion date is August 12, 2024.

We ask that until that date you use the forum software to mark any spoilers, either story based or mechanical, in the discussion below. Ideally the bulk of the discussion will occur after August 12, but if you want to comment before then you are welcome to so long as the spoilers are marked. We ask that if you leave a comment before that date you also come back to the thread after it to read other people’s comments and respond to them, though of course we cannot force you to do so.

All are welcome to participate regardless of whether you have stated a preference to or not and there is absolutely no commitment. You do not have to finish the game to participate but please let us know if you have not.

You are also free to come back any time after the completion date and share your thoughts! This club is meant to be open to all whenever you want to join in the fun!

It's funny that I voted for this one using a #1 slot and now find myself progressing through three Souls/like games simultaneously. Working through Elden Ring DLC (which I love) and Another Crab's Treasure (which I'm enjoying more than I expected).

I'm very interested in checking this out because it currently sits at 70% on OpenCritic, the Platonic ideal of a 7/10 game. Also... a 9 hour long game would go down real smooth right now.

Well, I've played a half hour of this game so far and I'm struggling to think of reasons why I should continue. I don't think I've felt this negatively about a game's story and cutscene animations in a really long time. The gameplay itself is mostly fine but the dodge feels terrible. Maybe it's playing others Souls-ish games recently, but Flintlock feels bottom tier. I cannot in good conscience recommend this game, unless you are morbidly curious or deadset on ranking all GPGC games this year.

I ended up having a decent time with this, though it's definitely no masterpiece. I know people that only really want to play 9/10 type games and I would never recommend this to them, but as someone that has been known to enjoy a AA budget 7/10 game from time to time, I liked this one.

The combat is by no means the best the souls-like genre has to offer, but once you get deeper into the skill trees there is fun to be had. Hit boxes were a continuously annoyance, specifically regarding enemy attacks that really did not feel like they should have hit, but once I got a handle on the game's quirks I was able to manage it to some extent.

The standout feature for me is the XP banking mechanic, which is genuinely something that felt unique (unlike a lot of the game) and is a legitimately great feature that I'd love to see more Souls-likes adopt. I also found some of the narrative stuff to be decent, mainly a lot of the banter between Nor and Enki, which was certainly helped by the solid voice acting. Though, no one should ever let Adam Jensen attempt a British accent ever again.
