Dune II 8/10

Better than the first film in every way. A lot of great action and a lot of good plot direction. Still, it's a little overrated. It's not the greatest action film ever made. That arguably still goes to Terminator 2. But the movie has a lot of nice set piece moments. I'm ready for the final film in the trilogy when it comes out.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Some fantastic scenes, but over all kinda uninspired. For a spin-off movie that's supposed to not include Max himself, they sure spent a lot of time establishing the new character Jack who's exactly like Max, down to the way he dresses and the gun he uses. A bit too many returning characters from Fury Road, and the few new ones stick very close to archetypes established by previous installments - including the new biker gang that's a lot like the bikers in the 1979 movie, though with a bit more of the Road Warrior costume styles. Some impressive crowd scenes. The action setpieces were at larger scales than in previous movies, but the actual setups were repeating a lot from Fury Road. I largely enjoyed the editing, which had a humorous and somewhat poetic way of stringing scenes together.

Over all I think it's the weakest Mad Max movie, but it was still an enjoyable watch. 6/10.

IF - 9/10

Beautiful, fun, emotional, and playful. Well acted by everyone. Whimsy in spades. My son came home and immediately began drawing his own Imaginary Friends. Also, helluva soundtrack.

Logan - 10/10

Having had multiple grandparents deal with degenerative brain diseases, I avoided watching this movie for years, only finally caving because of the impending return of the Wolverine in Deadpool III. What a movie. Kudos to Fox for demonstrating that superheroes can be used to tell stories beyond the typical tropes... even if the film contains a few of those as well.

Peanut Butter Falcon - 10/10

A small movie with a huge heart. Must-see film for anyone who loves wrestling, actors somehow overcoming their personal demons to create something magical (go, Shia LeBeouf!), and films that challenge the status-quo assumptions and ableism. Also, Jake 'the Snake' Roberts plays a villain perfectly.

The Iron Claw - 8/10

Gut-wrenching film about a somehow more awful true story. The fact that the film had to ignore one of the six Von Erich boys so as to not bludgeon the audience with terrible news tells you something. I was surprised by how well Zac Efron did with the role of Kevin Von Erich. His chin transformation is still very distracting.

Ricky Stanicky - 7/10

John Cena plays a crass comedy character has become a bit of a cliche. Fortunately, this movie dares to try and subvert that cliche by inserting some much-needed heart. Doesn't do anything groundbreaking, but does manage to surprise you a couple of times. Also, William H. Macy as the straight man in absurd situations always works for me.

Now this is the summer blockbuster viewing experience I remember: watching awesome car chases in an air-conditioned room. The movie does not well in box office. Don't care. Only good theatre nowadays is an empty theatre.

I started watching random movies for the first time in over a decade so I've watched or rewatched a lot of movies I haven't seen in years. I started playing movies from one of those free, ad-supported services in the background instead of Youtube since Youtube's recommendations have become extremely iffy the last few months or so.

The Fast and the Furious - I have seen this movie dozens of times. It barely has a plot but it's so much fun. MIA. MIA I'M A COP 4/5

Jurassic Park - It's Jurassic Park 5/5

Showgirls - I've never seen this movie but Alex Navarro mentioned he loves it and it's one of his mom's favourite movies. I'd also never seen a Verhoeven movie (I am planning on correcting this. I need to see Robocop) so this was one to start with I guess. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit for what it was. I had no idea there was so much controversy or division over this movie (but then again, it was 90s era controversy, which is extremely tame compared to today). 4/5

Spring Breakers - This movie is mostly nonsense but it's fun. Skrillex did the soundtrack, which is hilarious. Spring Break forever, bitches. 4/5

American History X - Great movie but good lord is it depressing. I had to look away a couple times because some of the scenes in it are brutal. 4/5

Wet Hot American Summer - Stupid as all hell but pretty fun. Some bits of it have not aged particularly well but I enjoyed it anyway. 3/5

Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me - I was one of the weird group of people who loved Twin Peaks and had watched the Return but never watched Fire Walk With Me (I love the first two seasons of Twin Peaks. I thought the Return was neat but I don't know if I'll go back to it ever). I'm extremely torn on this movie. Bits of it are really neat. A huge portion of it feels needless. It covers things already talked about extensively in the show and were things that we didn't need to see shown explicitly. It also had a distinct lack of Big Ed, which is a huge negative in my book. Maybe I'll like it on future viewings but right now I'm pretty cold on it 2/5

Dune 2, 9/10. I wasnt a fan of the first Dune, thought it was too slow, boring and frankly, confusing. The 2nd movie more than made up for it and is now one of my all time favorite sci-fi flicks.

I watched Fallout. It was excellent and very true to the spirit, and the details, of the games, with the same mix of cynicism, violence and dark humor. Although actually, it was a bit *too* cynical at times.

The last episode drops a *ton* of exposition on us all at once, all of which mostly amounts to Vault-Tec secretly engineering everything about the world. In particular, they dropped the bombs, both in the first blasts *and* on Shady Sands. That seems... a bit too much? Their motivation doesn't make much sense. I mean, they're going to make themselves pretty miserable as well. Don't they want, like, money, instead of, y'know, bottlecaps? I liked it better when I thought they just pushed the US further and further into war and unintentionally caused the nukes through greed.

It's also a bit weird that everyone is going around with fusion cores throughout the series and then cold fusion is such a breakthrough at the end. It already seems like fusion cores do a great job of powering everything on their own. Why not just mass produce those.

Alien Romulus

3 out of 5

Seen a morning screening here in the city housing miHoYo's global headquarters. It's just okay, nowhere near as good as Alien and Aliens. In a desire to be a sequel to both Prometheus and Alien, the most well-lit screen in this one is dedicated to referring that piece of shit from 2012, I rolled my eyes. While it's nice to see those symbols the late Ron Cobb designed for the 1979 having more use in the plot of this one, ultimately a teen (At least the kids here act dumb out of desperation rather than stupidity) slasher with the icon dickhead monster is not exactly worth a trip to the theatre. Greedy fucks should have put up on Hulu as they planned.

P.S. Personally Fede Alvarez was hired because of Don't Breath rather than the Evil Dead remake. I mean the 2016 flicks also has kids getting into some abandoned place where a blind motherfucker is ready to foul them up. Including making people carrying said blind er, things' baby.

Once I finished this, HBO suggested like 8 other Kong/Godzilla movies. I didn't realize how much this franchise has been milked.

Megalopolis was fine. Vibes of the neoexpressionist sci-fi of the late 90s (Dark City, Nirvana, 13th Floor etc), which I enjoyed, but also without any subtlety whatsoever, all the visual metaphors were pretty overt, and just in case the viewer didn't get it they made a point of having the dialogue explain it afterwards. There were absolutely zero questions left unanswered at the end of the movie, and I would've appreciated if there had been, and I think historically Coppola's films have left a lot of room for interpretation, but I doubt there will be a lot of different readings of this. 3/5

Watched My Hero Academia: You're Next. Anime movie released at the same time the manga's series finale was released. It's very much on par with other anime movies in that it is basically a big budget filler arc with nothing really of substance for the main characters but instead follow the story of a couple of randos, in this case a rich girl with a quirk that powers up people's quirks and her butler who is trying to save/kill her.

As a standard anime movie it is good. It showcases the main characters doing cool things while fighting big bads. As a movie released at the same time as the series finale, unfortunately, it's nothing noteworthy. I am probably unfairly comparing this to "The Last - Naruto The Movie" which also released at roughly the same time as the series finale and explored the relationship between the main character and his love interest which actually had lasting character development.

As I said, movie is fine. Go watch it if you wanna see Midoriya SMASH some mafia dudes real good but don't expect anything special because it released with the finale. 3/5

Joker: Folie a Deux.

Is 2/5 for me. Didn't saw the meaning of why they made this movie. They shouldn't had made a sequel.

Great actors, Phoenix and Gaga, but bad script.

Watched the directors/extended cut of Aliens 3 for the first time.

It’s better than the original cut. Still not as good as the first two, but better than anything that came after. Haven’t seen Romulus yet, though.

Finally rewatched this for the first time since initial release. It still holds up. The first story is still amazing and freaky. Never seen any of the ones after that, but I heard a lot of them are good. Would have been perfect but there were a couple of duds.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice gets a 7.5 from me. It was a decent flick. No where near the same magnitude of greatness as the first one but that's to be expected. I felt like the movie relied too much on nostaglia. There were too many scenes that were like "hey, you remember this from the first one? Well we are doing it again". Even in regards to the climax of the film. I was genuinely disappointed by the lack of originality. Other than that, it was enjoyable to watch. Loved the idea of beetlejuice's backstory. Thought the characters had really neat costume designs. Really good choice of music for the score. All in all, a decent follow up to a great and memorable film.

Its been awhile, but since people seem to be bumping this thread again, I'll start giving entries again.

The Shadow Strays - 8/10

This over the top action film on Netflix is so well-made, it would make John Woo blush. Everything is here, epic martial arts battles. Blistering gun fights. Cinematic well-timed bullet time scenes. All of them well choreographed. A decent storyline, and an ending which suggest a sequel. If they make one, which seems likely because the film is a hit, I'll be watching it. If you've been craving an action film on the level of Hard Boiled, Replacement Killers, and of course the classic Face/Off, this movie is for you.

Late Night with the Devil - 8/10

A psychological horror film about a late night talk show host so desperate to save his show, he unknowingly allows evil on what would be the final episode. Of course, there is a lot more to it than that, and it's very well done. The film is set up like a lost episode that was buried, but recently found to reveal to all many years later. I don't want to spoil anything, but if you're interested, the movie is a Hulu exclusive.

@hhap: If you're interested, they made a full movie based on the first story of V/H/S called Siren. That's how popular that first story was.

Clerks 2 - I hadn't watched this one since around release back when I was in high school. Some bits of it are pretty funny but wow has it aged badly. It's the perfect encapsulation of the bad part of 00s humour. It's still a decent movie to turn your brain off to but oh boy. 3/5

Visually, I felt this was ahead of it's time. Wish the story could keep up with that. I was hoping for subtle references to the games, but it was a boring, drawn out story.

Yo, so the last two movies I watched? Absolute bangers. Let me break it down for you real quick:

1. 12th Fail9.5/10

This movie is straight-up inspiring. It’s all about turning failures into comebacks. The story follows a guy who flunks 12th grade but decides he’s not gonna let that define him. He pushes through all the struggles to prepare for the UPSC exam, and lemme tell you, it’s so raw and real. What I loved the most? The vibe is super relatable, especially for anyone grinding through life and chasing big dreams. It's emotional but never over the top, and the lead actor (Vikrant Massey, btw) absolutely killed it. A must-watch if you need some motivation. 🎯

2. Lapata Ladies9/10

This one? Hilarious and quirky AF. Set in rural India, it’s about two brides who legit get swapped on their wedding day, and chaos just takes over. The humor is on point, and the characters are so colorful and fun to watch. What I loved the most was how it tackled real issues like gender and societal norms but kept it lighthearted. Also, the https://www.timechart.org Work & performances were 🔥. Honestly, it’s just one of those feel-good movies that stays with you.

I am a pretty forgiving reviewer, so know that before the reviews of the last two movies I've seen. :

  • Red One 2.5/5 Overall a fun Christmas romp with an interesting Santa, but holy cow does the CG look bad. If you are going to have a movie that has a scene that takes place on a beach, film on a gosh darn beach. The creature makeup was great, though so that helped. I won't watch this one again.
  • Gladiator II 3/5 I really liked the first half of this movie, but the last half seemed oddly paced. I heard other's feelings about the lead (Paul Mescal) being the weakest part, and I totally agree. All the side characters were interesting, especially with Denzel Washington turning in a great performance. I can easily see him getting a supporting actor nom at the academy awards next year. Overall, I am glad I saw it.
